Everything keeping me together is falling apart.
I've got this thing that I consider my only art:
Fucking people over.

So begins an album which tells the story of a man (who I'll call Isaac), who rather than being the one doing the fucking, gets kicked over and over again. It begins with the song Third Planet, which sets the stage.

Everything is falling apart. His boss just quit the job to go look for blindspots, the world is obsessed with God's plan for them, and Isaac is with his girlfriend.

She's just had a miscarriage (baby-cum-angels fly around you, reminding you we used to be three and not just two.), which has put a strain on both of them. Isaac ties this back to the universe as a whole, the growth of a child in the womb is similar to the life on earth, growing and living, before dying without ever leaving the third planet. Foreshadowing the rest of the album, he remarks; the universe is shaped exactly like the earth, if you go straight long enough, you'll end up where you were.

In Gravity Rides Everything, Isaac tries to explain his realizations to his girlfriend as a way to console her. He tries an 'everything happens for a reason' approach: On spilt milk, sex and weight; everything will fall right into place. When we die, some sink and some lay, but at least I won't see you float away

She doesn't like this explanation; after all, she's just gone through the death of a child. How dare Isaac tell her that it will all be okay! They have an argument, with Isaac remarking that, 'It took a lot of work to be the ass I am, and I'm real damn sure that anyone can equally, easily, fuck you over.' He's essentially telling her to grow up, that she has to realize that sometimes life happens. Vilifying him for what happened won't solve anything. She doesn't accept this, and they break up.

A short while later, Isaac is bitter at her. The next time he sees her, in Perfect Disguise he takes the fact that she's better off post-relationship as proof that she was using him to climb up some fool-ass ladder, and sarcastically wishes her luck before he bids her farewell forever.

Not learning anything from his Third Planet realization about the shape of the universe, Isaac runs away to Tiny Cities Made Of Ashes. He does this because he's afraid that if he stays around, he'll do something stupid (I'm gonna hit you in the face, I'm gonna punch you in the glasses - oh no!), and because of a grass-is-greener mentality. He feels as if God has abandoned him; his previously perfect life has gone to shit - Hell has frozen over.

In A Different City, Isaac idealizes becoming a shut-in as a way of repairing his damaged psyche. He says he'll watch people through the cracks in the wall and on television. Cynically, he sees the decal man, the politicians as lying fools, whereas the 'smart' men like him don't say anything at all. He feels forgotten and betrayed by everyone; mainly his ex, and he vows not to forget that. Eventually he says goodbye to The Cold Part of the world to live a better life, with everything he's learned.

Of course, the baggage he has refuses to leave him Alone Down There, and he can't stop thinking. The voice inside his head keeps telling him that he was the one who was wrong all along, and in The Stars Are Projectors, he starts to come to grips with his faults.

The

Isaac goes through his laundry-list of problems, and assigns blame where it's due. He looks to the stars for guidance as he thinks things through. He realizes that she had it harder than he could have imagined at the time, and it was him who pushed her away, not the other way around. In Third Planet, Isaac remarked that her heart was dripping pitch and made of wood, in The Stars are Projectors he realizes that he was the one with the heavy, wooden heart all along.

He also comes to grips with politicians, who are only trying to find the best way to get things done. With the rest of his time, Isaac wonders about the universe, and how it was actually created. He's abandoned his faith in God by this time, so he searches for other answers.

Wild Pack Of Family Dogs serves as a flashback to Isaac as a kid. When he was young, a pack of dogs came through his neighbourhood, and his dad scared them off. When his own dog died, rather than tell him the truth, they said that his pet had joined the pack and was running free. Then, Isaac's sister died, and still too young to understand, he clung to the idea that the pack of dogs must have eaten her. Later, after his dad lost his job, Isaac fell into a depression where he'd sit outside waiting for the pack to claim him.

When Isaac finally returns home, after spending so much time alone, he starts to feel a little claustrophobic. He goes back to his cynical outlook quickly; he's surrounded by Paper Thin Walls, where everyone's watching his every move.

In I Came as a Rat, Isaac's taking accountability again for his own faults, but also takes a few more digs at the creator who's to blame for these faults. He realizes that running away didn't solve anything, so he decides to leave in a different way, and kills himself.

Lives is a song from a post-mortem Isaac to society. He immediately regrets his decision, and tries telling everyone that it's not worth it. As he says,

It's hard to remember, it's hard to remember
We're alive, for the first time.
It's hard to remember, it's hard to remember
We're alive, for the last time.
It's hard to remember, it's hard to rememberTo live, before you die
It's hard to remember, it's hard to remember
When it takes, such a long time

In Life Like Weeds, to his ex-girlfriend, he asserts that 'you're just a rock to me.' And he wishes he could have said everything he meant to say. Isaac wishes he could have said how much he loved her, how he wishes that he hadn't have gotten so angry at her. It was all his fault; but he couldn't do anything to control it because 'our hearts are just made out of strings to be pulled.'

Finally, he talks to himself in his infinite loneliness. The final conclusion that he comes to from this is What People Are Made Of, particularly people like himself: THEY AIN'T MADE OF NOTHIN' BUT WATER AND SHIT.
