Windows Server 2008 R2 Thread, Server 2008 R2 Install Problem on HP ProLiant DL360 G5 in Technical. Are there any BIOS/Firmware updates available for the server?

  1. Hp Proliant Dl580 G5 Firmware Update
Hello, I recently just purchased an HP Proliant dl360 g5 rack server from my school today for $100. I was happy with the good deal so I brought it home and hooked it up. It starts up, fans are at 100%. 5 minutes go by, 20 minutes go by 1 hour goes by and it hasn't even hit post yet. So I create a thread on here and ask why it's not working. I get an answer saying update your firmware here, I went to the site only to find out I wasted my $100 on this server. The wonderful company of HP charges people to get Bios updates if you're not under a warranty. So I go and check how much this warranty would cost thinking it would be like $20 but no it was $1000 for a 1year warranty. So now my options are 1. Pay to make this thing work or 2. Sell it. I'm a Jr in high school taking a Computer Technician Analyst class trying to get my A+ certification. All I want to do is have a server and learn Linux on it. I'm not using this for anything business related. So is there a way to get the bios for free or should I sell this thing?

Seeing the Dell R200 for sale at the pfSense store, along with the comment below from another post; I am trying to decide between these 2 units which would make a better pfSense firewall.

@cmb: Resident evil 4 texture patch 2.0 installation.

The R200s were donated in bulk by a supporter of the project. We use somewhere around 20 of them for testing and development purposes internally…

This got me thinking if the R200 has been used for development the R300 should run quite smoothly, However there will be some changes to the stock hardware with the addition of an Intel Quad port server NIC (ET2). http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/network-adapters/gigabit-network-adapters/ethernet-et2-multi-port.html

Considering the machines would also be using the same Quad core 2.6G CPU and 4GRAM in this scenario, both machines to be configured with embedded version (From USB key) with no saved log files and only basic routing functionality. here are the options:

Bios

Dell R300 http://www.dell.com/downloads/ap/products/servers/r300_spec_sheet_new.pdf
Initial observations. Intel 3400 Chipset, Intel I/OAT support in BIOS (Intel ET2 NIC supports not sure about FreeBSD8.3/pfSense)

THIS is also a serious security consideration with the Dell server:

HP Proliant DL320 G5 http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12854_na/12854_na.pdf
Initial observations. Intel 3210 Chipset, no I/OAT support in BIOS.

Given this scenario which would you select? Anybody familiar with both?
